Exemplars

Exemplars are examples of student work that exceed the rubric. Many students created artwork that met the rubric in a basic or intermediate way, fewer students exceeded the rubric. Students who have a gift in a particular way of learning can often exceed the rubric. It is important to have a variety of assessments in a thematic unit so that students can show they have understanding of benchmark standards.  This student used both paint and oil pastels to illustrate her poem. She used a variety of color, blended color, and imagery from her written words for this exceptional piece.

Here is another exemplar.  I posted the rubric below the painting so that you can see how the rubric guides the student work and product. The images he chose to focus on from his poem were helio, mano, ocean, mother. His emotion was powerful, energetic, as he explained in his poem, "why is my mind like a battery pumping electricity?" He drew this image by drawing a lightning bolt. You can also see his "love for the ocean" with the blue waves in the bottom left corner. He blended the colors smoothly and used shadowing to create dreamy spiritual artwork.

In the painting below, a student used the moon to represent them. Across the forehead you can see the ohana drawn as petroglyphs, and the mouth is the student. Stars were scratched out of a solid black sky that had colors layered underneath. Other images from the student poem are heart, see, eyes, and energy.
