Draw your poem
Hawaiian is a SPOKEN language. Written Hawaiian words did not exist before the Europeans came to Hawaii. The next step in the project, is to take your poem and turn it into a beautiful picture. It is going to be difficult because some of you think in words. Spend 5 minutes reflecting on what you wrote. Make sure you have highlighted or underlined your chosen words. Focus on these. Read the first line of your poem. Read the last line of your poem. What pictures come to your mind?
Use a blank piece of drawing paper as your canvas. Divide the paper into parts by either folding it, or drawing lines. The lines don’t need to be straight. Now start at a place in your poem, and begin drawing what you feel or see. This paper will be a picture of your poem. Use petroglyphs wherever need be (if you click on the word petroglyphs you can see the petroglyphs we used in class!) or to separate areas of your drawing. Draw in layers, use colored pencils to experiment with different colors. What color is Life? Mana? The Moon? Fill up all the space. This is a rough draft of your canvas. Take home your drawing and your poem for final editing. We will transfer this drawing onto a prepared canvas the next time we meet.
